Dwayne Phillips ' Day Book

Items I happen to view each day. Science, Techonology, Management, Culture, and of course Writing

This is my day book for this week. I have modeled this after science fiction and computer writer Jerry Pournelle's view, or as he calls it, his Day Book. I encourage you to see Jerry Pournelle's site and subscribe to his services.

Summary of this week:

The benefits to consumers of all these robots taking all these jobs. You benefit if you still have a job.

Samsung continues its struggles with the inflammable Galaxy Note 7; they suspend production.

The EU will add regulations regarding the (in)security of Internet of Things devices.

A closer look at Hero's new cameras and systems.

A long story detailing woes at Google's robotics divisions. Google is conservative when releasing new products on the world.

Is the all-electric-powered car dead, again? It just isn't economical yet.

Will Facebook and Google dominate the world for the next ten years? Perhaps this is all folly.

The misery continues in Haiti. This time its a hurricane causing a spike in attention. I guess I don't understand how any of the is works, but I make a case for the UN hiring Halliburton or someone to manage the place and reduce the suffering.

Practical security: the Apple Watch is banned from UK cabinet meetings from fear that it is hacked and listening.

This story is all over the Internet, so it must be important: everyone is talking about MS Paint for Win10.

O'Reilly has a large collection of programming eBooks for no charge.

The old guys strike back! Older programmers sue and win in court against Google for age discrimination.

Samsung kills the Galaxy Note 7. The End. Finished. That is it. Somewhat unprecedented. Samsung is losing $17billion on the Galaxy Note 7.

Some of us remember the stock market crash of 1987. Is is about to happen again?

People have moved to iOS 10 faster than any prior update. Perhaps we just all expect updates.

It now appears that no one wants to buy Twitter, and this is killing its stock price.

Man made climate change has increased forest fires (dubious) and has caused the catastrophic 2016 election (obvious).

FreeBSD 11.0 is released.

Keegan, an automated photography coach. Send it a photo, get some tips.

Ken Bone: unlikely American "hero." Such is this year's election.

Since Facebook replaced humans with software, it can't keep fake news off the site.

It won't happen to me. Samsung customers want to keep their Galaxy Note 7 phones.

HP evolves its portable computer line with edge-to-edge display, infrared camera, and of course faster processors.

Our government sets new records in asking Google for our information about us. What are we doing?

Our President keeps talking AI research. Who was President the last 7 years 10 months?

Apple's Siri was the leading edge; now it lags behind everyone.

Lots of criticism today about Donald Trump entering women's dressing rooms. The criticizers are the same persons who advocate for gender self-identification and using whatever dressing room a person chooses. I suppose that there is much about this that I don't understand.

Big soda, big money, and health studiers. Who is the bad guy here? The money people or those who sell out to them?

Shocking news (not). Companies that offer luxury services target the wealthy as customers.

Economic recovery? Layoffs in the technology industry are growing. The unemployed will never work in tech again.
