{"id":1067,"date":"2012-02-22T01:07:03","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T06:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dwaynephillips.net\/workingup\/?p=1067"},"modified":"2012-02-15T14:46:03","modified_gmt":"2012-02-15T19:46:03","slug":"risk-managers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dwaynephillips.net\/workingup\/2012\/02\/risk-managers\/","title":{"rendered":"Risk Managers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Dwayne Phillips<\/p>\n<p><strong>The foundation of risk management is asking, &#8220;What could possibly go wrong?&#8221; Some people, however, shrug when asked while others make a list of a million things.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A recent chat:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Person A: What do you know about risk management?<\/p>\n<p>Me: A &#8220;risk&#8221; is a problem that hasn&#8217;t occurred yet.<\/p>\n<p>Person A: What do you do in risk management?<\/p>\n<p>Me: Ask, &#8220;What could possibly go wrong?&#8221; Record all the answers. Plan for what you would do if something actually went wrong. Watch for tips of impending wrong-ness. Implement your plans.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The conversation ended there. I thought more about it later and concluded that there is one big problem with risk management:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The person answering the question, &#8220;What could possibly go wrong?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are people who shrug. &#8220;Nothing,&#8221; is there answer. Nothing? &#8220;Sure,&#8221; they continue, &#8220;nothing. There are no potential problems here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then there are people like me. &#8220;How many things do you want me to write? Ten? A hundred? A thousand?&#8221; People like me see possible problems every where with every thing and every one. Here is a generic list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>people fall ill<\/li>\n<li>people quit their job<\/li>\n<li>people become angry and pout<\/li>\n<li>people don&#8217;t like each other<\/li>\n<li>some people are jerks<\/li>\n<li>the weather becomes bad and everyone stays home<\/li>\n<li>the roof leaks and destroys our computers and backups<\/li>\n<li>an earthquake tumbles the building and destroys all our work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And I haven&#8217;t mentioned anything about the product being impossible to build.<\/p>\n<p>I guess the problem with risk management is much like all the other problems with project management.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The source of all problems is people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ask the fundamental question of the right person.
