{"id":2601,"date":"2018-02-05T01:06:51","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T06:06:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dwaynephillips.net\/workingup\/?p=2601"},"modified":"2018-01-27T09:11:54","modified_gmt":"2018-01-27T14:11:54","slug":"the-accountability-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dwaynephillips.net\/workingup\/2018\/02\/the-accountability-question\/","title":{"rendered":"The Accountability Question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Dwayne Phillips<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let&#8217;s reduce all this accountability business to a simple question.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Accountability Question:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;What happens if I don&#8217;t do this?<\/em> (thing you told me to do or some regulation or policy says I have to do)&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If the answer is, &#8220;nothing.&#8221; Well then, we have no accountability.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe this &#8220;thing&#8221; just isn&#8217;t important in which case we have to ask,<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;If it isn&#8217;t important, why did you tell me to do it?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If the answer is, &#8220;because, uh, er, just because.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then no one is holding you as a manager accountable for wasting resources.<\/p>\n<p>So this idea of &#8220;being held accountable&#8221; goes around in some type of circle. Are people accountable, i.e., do they have to account for or justify the resources they spend? If I don&#8217;t do what you tell me, I am doing something else, i.e., I am spending resources on something else. Must I account for those resources?<\/p>\n<p>But we go back to the fundamental question above, &#8220;What happens if I don&#8217;t do this?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Answer, &#8220;You will no longer be paid to come here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh, I guess I will do this, at least for now. If it is too distasteful, I will leave.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a high-unemployment economy, leaving and finding another paying job isn&#8217;t so easy, so people are more apt to &#8220;just do it&#8221; than ask the Accountability Question.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Dwayne Phillips Let&#8217;s reduce all this accountability business to a simple question.
