Items I happen to view each day. Science, Technology, Management, Culture, and Writing
This is my day book for this week. It is a log of things I see on the Internet.
One person's predictions on how the work-from-home economy will change people's lives and their communities. We are in a transition now. It is chaos, and that is a hallmark of transition. It will take years for people to move from here to there. And 65% of America will still go to the workplace.
More woes for Russia from the Ukraine invasion.
It appears that the Ford Motor company lied a lot over the fuel economy of its 2013 hybrid models. And so we wonder about the claims being made today about the electric vehicles. Once you lie, you are a liar, and liars continue to lie.
Minor league baseball is now using computer systems to call balls and strikes. Finally.
There are no bridges crossing the Amazon River. The reasons are largely cultural.
The service industry is buying more automation and machinery instead of hiring people.
The basic and oft-neglected practice of "doing the work."
This is how one person writes and brings income in retirement.
Writing sales copy for the exploding market online sales.
I like this qoute, "Writer's block is having too much time on your hands."
One writer's ten-year journey to a finished novel. If you want to write one book in ten years, good for you. If you want to write one book in one month, good for you. They both work.
This one caught my attention: the Julie and Julia formula. Read everything from and about a famous person. Write about it. There may be a built-in audience of others who read about that topic.
From the above: is the Bible that book that I have read and read and read? Have I already been writing and writing and writing about it? Perhaps I have been writing enough about it. And another topic person could be my father. Most of the folks who knew him are already dead. Is that something that would slow a following or speed it? Too much to resolve today.
Notes on writing from Ian Fleming.
....This is a slow Tuesday for Internet viewing. As yesterday was a holiday in the US, this is a second Monday for the week.
The UK has something called a High Potential Individual visa for Americans who graduate from one of 20 colleges. Sounds like a good idea for encouraging immigration. When I was a child, I was taught that this is what smart countries did. Smart countries encourage immigration of persons who would add to the country. Smart countries did not allow immigrants who would subtract from the country. I guess there is too much judgement involved in that concept.
China claims to be close to completing its space station. The governors of China and Russia are partnering to jet past the US in manned space exploration.
A programmer made Lotus 123 run on Linux. For youngsters, Lotus 123 was once the dominant spreadsheet in the marketplace. This programmer has lots of time. There are worse things to do with time and talent.
.....IBM must pay BMC $1.6Billion (with a B) rules a Federal judge.
Apple's Safari browser crosses a market threshold with a billion (with a b) users.
Elon Musk declares that work from home is no longer allowed at Tesla.
Panasonic and Leica partner to build new cameras. They had a close business relationship for several decades.
Reports of high anxiety in the tech industries.
Using one AI to fool another and prevent folks listening in on your conversations.
.....It appears that America's Cyber Command has been directly involved in the Russia-Ukraine war. I suppose we are now in the era where nation states commit acts of war on a regular basis when there is no state of war.
It appears that it is okay to ban books as long as they are the right or wrong books.
NASA's saga with new space suits continues.
Microsoft updates its Surface Laptop Go with new Intel processor and better camera.
Despite everything, Russia's oil industry continues to make lots of money for a few Russians.
Google is combining its two meeting apps into one called "Meet."
HP leaves the Russian market and leaves $1Billion in sales.
.....And now we have the "influencers." These folks are the new news stars who made lots of money on the Depp-Heard trial. The Depp-Heard trial was a California soap opera that turned a he-said-she-said episode into million$$$.
Google stumbles on the issue of the caste system in India and how it affects immigrants from there working in America. This is a big deal that has simmered beneath the surface for years.
The senior managers at Apple are attempting to improve the working conditions at retail stores.
Rumors that Apple is trying to improve the multi-tasking on the iPad. Copy from this app to that app. Switch between apps without pushing that home button 23 times.
The HP Dev One developer's laptop is now available for purchase.
And now someone has hacked to iPad so that it can run Linux.
.....AI is drawing little pictures. People who draw little pictures may soon be out of jobs.
The general consensus is that social media is bad for society. Whoever general consensus is doesn't know the people that I know on social media.
Comment on social media: there was a time in America's recent past when an adult would tell a child something like, "That person is a gossip and trouble maker. Don't listen to anything they say! Stay away from them." And the troubles ended there. Then we became "smarter" (not).
.....We need (or do we?) an AI of Things or AIoT.
I found this article to be worth the time to read about "Migrant TikTok." Social media like this can be helpful to many persons. It is also amazing that immigrants fleeing for their lives can afford and carry the technology needed to tell their stories to the entire world.
Google provides more support to startup businesses with its Google Cloud services. It is simple: help companies start. If the companies hit it big, they will probably stay with Google.
Someone steps back and considers the rush to Web3 and a crypto-dominated experience. A few will make a ton of money. Most will see nothing in return. See, e.g., Levi Strauss and the gold rush of the 1800s.
Blue Origin has flight #5 of its tourist trip to near space. Nice video in the article.
Stronger rumors that this week's big event from Apple will focus on augmented reality (AR).
I like this article Linux versions that you can run on your home computer instead of Microsoft and Apple. I have experimented with several of these. They work well in the area for which they were made.
